One of the appeals to making money from home is the flexibility of your time and versatility of your schedule. Other people may see a schedule that is always adaptable no matter how much notice they give you or the season of the year. You work at home therefore you are always available.
Closing the door to your home office is the easiest way to make money from home. If you begin with an open door, others will interpret that as a willingness to be interrupted. You have to develop your own strategies to stay on task no matter whether you are home alone making money or your house is full of visitors.
This can be especially challenging when first beginning to make money from home. Establish some guidelines and rules about your work time. It is inevitable that there will be invasions of your productivity and therefore limits to your income potential. Until you know how this is all going to work out for you, it is even more challenging than for someone who has been making money from home for a long time. You have to work hard to keep yourself on task just as much as not letting anyone else affect your to-do list.
It doesn’t matter if it is an unexpected phone call, a long anticipated extended visit, or a discussion about something that happened at school today, make the time for your family. Adjust your schedule if you can and, of course, if you have to and then accept the adjustment. Concentrate on family when it is family time and work when it is work time.
Take a couple of deep breaths and open the door for the relatives that live in distant lands, friends that live the next town over and family that lives under the same roof. Be adaptable but remember that one of the easiest ways to make money from home is that when working focus on your tasks at hand, not worrying whether your guests are having a good time. And just as important, if you are entertaining visitors then be completely present with them, don’t check email, answer the phone or anything else that is work related.
Make sure to remember to close your door behind you when you leave your office at the end of the day as well. It’s a subtle way to make the distinction but it works. Remember this is your home and your office.
